Kashubian cooking is fish, potatoes in the lead role and dishes you won't find in chains. It pays to turn off the main promenades and look for places run by their owners.
What to orderThe classics are "modra" (Kashubian) cabbage, potato pancakes ("plince"), herring done several ways and fresh fish from a lake or straight off the boat. For something sweet: yeast bakes and "ruchanki".
Where to lookThe best addresses hide in Kartuzy, Chmielno, Wdzydze and around the lakes near Wieżyca. Look for fish bars and inns with a short, seasonal menu — a sign the fish is fresh, not frozen.
Pair food with sightseeingA meal slots easily into a route: the open-air museum in Wdzydze, the ceramic workshops in Chmielno or the Kashubian Eye viewing tower are natural stops on a culinary loop.
Tip: on Sundays family inns fill up after Mass — book a table or arrive right after opening.
